Fino Mornasco, Italy, October 18 2024: D-Orbit, a leader in the space logistics and transportation services industry, announced a collaborative mission with OQ Technology, the world's first satellite telecom operator for global 5G IoT connectivity. Scheduled for early 2026, the mission will involve hosting OQ’s innovative 5G IoT NonTerrestrial Network (NTN) payload, showcasing the versatility of D-Orbit's ION Satellite Carrier and advancing OQ Technology's innovative satellite-based IoT solutions.
The mission will serve as a first of a kind cell tower in space hosted on D-Orbit to expand OQ’s NTN satellite constellation and connectivity service portfolio. OQ Technology is advancing its 5G NTN services adding new 3GPP standard features to address high capacity D2D customers; the payload will function as a sky-based cell tower, capable of connecting to various 3GPP-standard compatible IoT devices. Additionally, OQ will leverage this hosting service to expand its global coverage, complementing its existing satellite network.
"This collaboration with OQ Technology exemplifies the adaptability of our ION Satellite Carrier," said Matteo Lorenzoni, VP Commercial Strategy at D-Orbit. "By accommodating OQ Technology's payload on our platform, we're enabling the testing of advanced services that would typically require a large, dedicated satellite. This approach significantly reduces the costs associated with developing, manufacturing, and operating a custom satellite platform for such demonstrations."
“We are very pleased to work with D-Orbit and start hosting our satellite 5G payloads on their spacecraft. We have been looking forward to use advanced platforms as a service for enabling us to expand out constellation and global 3GPP standard connectivity coverage,” commented Omar Qaise, CEO and founder of OQ Technology.
ION Satellite Carrier is an innovative satellite platform designed, manufactured and operated by D-Orbit. The spacecraft is modular and capable to perform multiple mission objectives at once, depending on the configuration. A typical ION mission involves objectives like satellite deployments, in-orbit demonstrations, and edge computing.
This collaborative effort between D-Orbit and OQ Technology represents a significant step forward in the development of innovative space-based services. It combines D-Orbit's expertise in space logistics and transportation with OQ Technology's pioneering work in satellite-based IoT connectivity using 5G technology.
This mission could pave the way for more efficient and cost-effective satellite services, particularly in the rapidly growing fields of IoT and 5G connectivity in remote areas.
About D-Orbit
D-Orbit is a market leader in the space logistics and transportation services industry with a track record of space-proven services, technologies, and successful missions.
Founded in 2011, D-Orbit is the first company addressing the logistics needs of the space market. ION Satellite Carrier, for example, is a space vehicle that can transport satellites in orbit and release them individually into distinct orbital slots, reducing the time from launch to operations by up to 85% and the launch costs of an entire satellite constellation by up to 40%. ION can also accommodate multiple third-party payloads like innovative technologies developed by startups, experiments from research entities, and instruments from traditional space companies requiring a test in orbit. ION also can be rented for edge computing applications and space cloud services to provide satellite operators with storage capacity and advanced computing capabilities in orbit.D-Orbit's roadmap includes becoming a relevant player in the in-orbit servicing market, which is forecasted to become one of the largest growing markets within the space sector.
With offices in Italy, Portugal, the UK, and a new US team which will focus on bus design and manufacturing, we are the first certified B-Corp space company in the world, pursuing business models that are profitable, friendly for the environment, and socially beneficial.
